Influence of Pacific Decadal Oscillation on global precipitation extremes

چکیده

Abstract While the influence of Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) on precipitation has been extensively studied, its extremes remains not well-known. Based a series generalized extreme value modeling experiments, this paper demonstrates some distinct regional patterns PDO’s worldwide. In eastern China, well-known ‘southern flood (drought) and northern drought (flood)’ pattern in summer corresponds well to positive (negative) phase PDO. Australia, there tends be tripole pattern, with correlation between PDO central region, negative both western Australia. The influence of the inter-decadal Pacific oscillation on US precipitation during 1923–2010

Precipitation over the contiguous United States exhibits large multi-decadal oscillations since the early twentieth century, and they often lead to dry (e.g., 1946–1976 and 1999-present) and wet (e.g., 1977–1998) periods and apparent precipitation trends (e.g., from the 1950s to 1990s) over most of the western and central US. The exact cause of these inter-decadal variations is not fully unders...

The Forcing of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation*

The Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), defined as the leading empirical orthogonal function of North Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies, is a widely used index for decadal variability. It is shown that the PDO can be recovered from a reconstruction of North Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies based on a first-order autoregressive model and forcing by variability of the Aleutian low...

The Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Pacific Salmon Production

Retrospective analyses of Pacific Basin climate records highlight the existence of a pan-Pacific interdecadal climate oscillation. We find strong evidence for coherent patterns of interdecadal variability in Pacific winds, sea level pressures, and upper ocean temperatures. Collectively, the ocean-atmosphere pattern of variability has been labeled the “Pacific Decadal Oscillation”, or PDO. An in...

Decadal Oscillation of Autumn Precipitation in Central Vietnam Modulated by the East Pacific-North Pacific (EP-NP)

Autumn precipitation over central Vietnam is associated with an increase in the occurrence of tropical cyclones that lead to frequent flooding and pose a significant threat to lives and property. The present analyses reveal a pronounced decadal oscillation of autumn precipitation in central Vietnam within the 8-11-year frequency band that is modulated by the East Pacific-North Pacific (EP-NP) t...

Combined effects of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and El Niño-Southern Oscillation on Global Land Dry–Wet Changes

The effects of natural variability, especially El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) effects, have been the focus of several recent studies on the change of drought patterns with climate change. The interannual relationship between ENSO and the global climate is not stationary and can be modulated by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). However, the global land distribution of the dry-wet chang...
